I think one of the big dangers of the Middle East is Israel panicking and overreacting to something. They're already in a crisis era, they're seeing the region get more and more dangerous for them, and it looks like they may not be able to count on our support. That's a good recipe for panic, and since it happened in 2006, it can easily happen again. Netanyahu is a prophet and pretty hard-line.

As for Greece, this "voluntary" agreement is a load of crap. I don't see anything voluntary about it. With the political upheaval... after they default, I think there's a good chance that Greece could fall back into a dictatorship.

Neither does Fitch, apparently.

Fitch regards the imposition of retrospective [collective action clauses] as a material adverse change in the terms and conditions of GGBs in the context of an imminent debt exchange and confirms its assessment that the exchange will be distressed and de facto coercive on private holders of Greek bonds. Nonetheless, the primary credit event is the exchange itself and Fitch will rate Greece and its securities accordingly.

Yeah, I've heard the rating agencies say that Greece is ready to default. The Europeans are screaming about this, some even claiming this is some kind of American plot to destroy the Euro. If it were, all we'd have to do is stand back and let them do it themselves, so that accusation makes no sense.

The inevitable is going to happen, one way or another.
