I'm wondering: is this low-level violence we're seeing in Libya or a continuation of the war, which I believe is a crisis war. It just doesn't read like a non-crisis war along political lines. I've read some reports on what's going on in Libya and it seems like one of the quarrels is between west and east Libya as to who will have a say in post-Qadaffi Libya. Eastern Libya has an advantage because they threw Qaddafi's hold on them early in the war and thus, had more time to form an organized government. Western Libya was in constant combat around the mountains and they were busy fighting for their survival, so they had less time to consolidate power.

I had thought that by moving to Anguilla in 1994 I would be much better off whatever happened. There was no crime, no income tax, hardly any property tax, no sales tax, and no VAT. The government collected customs tax and a hotel tax on tourists. Investing in real estate seems much better when there is no property tax. Doing an Internet business without needing to report sales or profits was great. It was really what I was looking for, see http://votewithyourfeet.com/

But governments grow bigger everywhere. Anguilla was no exception. It was just that Anguilla's revolution was in 1967-1969 so the government had not grown very large by 1994. Now we have a wages tax and in another year or so we will have VAT. Property taxes are going up fast, though still very small compared to the US. And the government is very much in debt so taxes just have to go up.

I now think that you are never really secure if you, your citizenship, your money, and your business are all under one government. More and more I like the idea of traveling around with a sort of floating home. With this I think you sort of could detach from whatever craziness was going on in the world.

There was some other thread that I posted to a few days ago about Anguilla and the post was lost. Since then there have been 2 murders (seemingly unrelated) in Anguilla. This brings our total so far this year up to 3. For a population of around 14,000 this is high. Good countries might get 4 per 100,000 people per full year. It usually seems to be young men here that are murdered and that are doing the murdering. Anguilla seems less dangerous for people not in that classification.

Like other places, taxes go up here between revolutions too. But our last revolution was not so long ago and taxes are still not too bad. No corporate taxes, no inheritance taxes, no sales taxes or vat yet, though coming, and property tax is very low by US standards (like $300 on a $500,000 house).
So I think Anguilla still ranks higher than the US in my criteria. Oh, see http://votewithyourfeet.com/
for some ranking thing I did long ago. :-)
