If we've seen the worst of the Syrian violence, then I'd say that the older generation has won this fight. Assad's not going to stand down or stop his attacks and intervening could spark a bigger war.

I do have a question, however: if Russia is supposed to be our ally in the clash of civilizations, why do they keep siding with China and assisting them in their military buildup?

Because the Russians can be morons. In 1939, Russia signed the
Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact with Nazi Germany, and Stalin thought that
Russia would be safe from Nazi aggression. Stalin was fat and happy
until he went into a state of shock on June 22, 1941, when Hitler's
forces poured into Russia. Russia is now making the same mistake with
China.

He also saw something to gain from it, like the eastern half of Poland. Didn't Stalin actually help build the military that Hitler ultimately turned on him?
