Could it have been that he was referring to the belief, often promoted by the Israeli government, that Israel is the rebirth of the ancient state of Israel referred to in all Abrahamic religions? Ask any traditional US rabbi and they'll tell you quickly that it is not, that no sign from God has been received to indicate the end of the Diaspora. So there might be a religious split on this issue from that direction, the government might be pushing the rabbinical councils in a direction they don't wish to go. Appears to be a traditional state-church alignment, if the church unblinkingly supports the state, the state will support the church. Creation of a Jewish Pope, who would ever have thought of such? Henry VIII must be laughing in his grave.
