With the way things are going, there are times I'm surprised that WWIII hasn't began already. However, you mentioned that the world looks like the prelude to the first world war and if I remember my history correctly, there were other incidents before Ferdinand's assassination. Europe came close to war a couple of times, but the incidents were eventually resolved, at least temporarily.
Honestly, I think that's why it hasn't. Whenever something flares up between Israel and Palestine, Pakistan and India, China and Taiwan, etc. the rest of the world, with the United States usually among the first in line, does everything in their power to find a peaceful resolution. Even so, eventually Europe was engulfed in war, and the same will happen to us.
