Things that can't go on forever don't go on forever. Europe can' t kick this can much longer. I have wondered a couple of times if Germany would simply leave the EURO and let the rest fend for themselves. The German politicians are delighted with the power they've acquired over Europe though, and aren't going to give that up easily. A referendum on staying in the zone would probably pass, but not by much and quite a bit would depend on the recent news and events when the referendum was held.

Treatment of prisoners swings between rehabilitation and simple punishment over time, and Breivik is in the wrong part of the cycle to get much sympathy, even in Europe. Twenty or thirty years from now he might get some public support. (Clemens regularly became incensed over people demanding better treatment for prisoners - but he was writing after the war was over for quite a while. It's all part of that cycle.)

Erdogan doesn't want to fight Syria for the same reason the rest of the world doesn't want to fight Syria, they'll spread that fight all over the MidEast immediately. At least that is the fear.
