Very possibly Hamas did miscalculate, just as OBL miscalculated the US reaction to the twin towers attack. The thought of the US having boots on ground in the MidEast for longer than they had in WWII never crossed his mind, if it had, he would not have been likely to do it. They assumed the US would react as France and Great Britian had always reacted to such attacks, rhetoric and a bit of bombing perhaps. Or they may have assumed the US would react as we did at a FAILED attempt to attack the towers several years earlier. There's a big difference between "blew up a part of a parking structure" and "knocked a hole in a major city", as OBL found out.

The Israeli reaction should not have been unexpected, given the war in Lebanon. But wishful thinking seems to dominate the minds of leaders at certain times, and they have to have sharp lessons to get over it. Hamas seems about to get another one.

I have my doubts that without some serious overkill by Israel that such a war will spread much if at all. The Israeli situation is simply too much on the radar in the US and Brussels. It will make good cover for Syria and Iran though, and war spreading from those directions cannot be discounted. Doubtless they'd start by saying "Israel has forced us to this" as a cover for whatever they subsequently did.

Taiwan just wants to quietly live their own lives and get on with things. Just MHO, but Taiwan is high on my list of countries "most likely to have successful secret nuclear weapon programs".
