Well, if Assad is going to fall, that means that Iran's going to send more troops to prop him up. They're not about to let him go without a fight and in any case, I don't think he's out of the fight yet. He's still got a chemical arsenal that he might be willing to use as a last resort.

As for the negotiations, I've maintained that this is a strategy on Obama's part, to send the economy crashing, getting all the tax hikes and military cuts he wants, and able to blame the other side for everything that goes wrong. I thought they couldn't disgust me more during the campaign, but yet again, I was mistaken.

I've also noticed that the 2012 election was a strong wave generationally. In the House of Representatives, about 1/3 of its members are generation X, while maybe 7 percent belong to the Silent Generation. The Senate is still mostly boomers, but about 1/5 of them are nomads as well, tripling it from just 5 years ago.

PKK is Kurdish workers party. Apart from hating Turkey, I don't see what they've got in common with Iran. However, the current Iranian govt has no hesitation about mucking about in other states affairs, so I'd not be surprised if they were supporting PKK. The Kurds in Iraq have pretty much run them out or allowed Turkey to cross the border and go into PKK camps inside Iraq. The Iraq Kurds mostly just want to be left alone by everyone, including the government in Baghdad.

Chavez may just be paranoid about enemies. That's common among his type of politician.

The fiscal cliff discussions that keep falling apart have surprised me, because there will be a lot less room for dealing after tomorrow, and generally politicians are willing to make deals if their position tomorrow will be worse than today. What seems to be happening is that the leaders on both sides have simply lost control, they can't bend enough to compromise and still get the votes to pass anything. This is a revolt from the seats. Those usually don't end well for anyone.
