1. TianAnMen was between the CCP and the students. The peasants in general were not involved. In fact, the army units used against the students were composed mainly of peasants.

2. Just a clarification, Thaksin is of Thai Chinese descent.

Yes, that's the generational conflict. But once the Awakening era
climax occurs, then something else happens. The population at large
takes sides along identity group lines rather than along generational
lines. Hence, you got the rise of the Falun Gong movement in China,
and the Wild Lily rebellion and independence movement in Taiwan.
