The Russians have the same issues as we have, like it or not, they've always been very similar to the US. They are not identical to the US, but they have great similarities.

The budget issue is driven by a huge group of false to fact misconceptions, chief among them the idea that the USA has a "huge" freely spending government. By simple comparison to other nations in the OECD, we don't. As a percentage of the GDP vs taxes collected, we are in the lowest. We are borrowing too much, and I've been shocked that taxes haven't been increased. How do you fight two wars and have constant security issues while cutting taxes? Along with a massive recession? You put it on the cuff and pretend you'll be responsible "any day now". That responsible day hasn't come since the first day Reagan made that claim.

It should be noted that expenditures vs GDP are at a 40 year high now, while tax income vs GDP is at a 40 year low. If tax income vs GDP was at the level it was in 1980, we would have no deficit worth mentioning.

They include government spending in GDP calculations. So, gov't spending vs GDP is a pointless comparison, and GDP vs taxes collected is misleading. A subtle point, government doesn't have income, only collections or revenue.

Approximately, Defense is 20% of spending, whereas transfer payments are 60% of spending. The remaining 20% is interest on debt and discretionary and other administrative costs. Obviously interest payments on debt already incurred, approximately ten percent, must be paid, and are beyond budgetary control. Thus of the remaining portion, Defense is 22%, 67% is transfer payments, and 11% is admin/disc. These are the facts with which one must start.
