Another issue is President Obama's disastrous speech on Thursday, including his statement that an Israeli-Palestinian deal should start with the 1967 borders.

To state anything resembling fact in the Israel/Palestine debate is to simply enrage people, as virtually everyone wants to live with fantasy.

Four unpopular facts.

1. The 1967 borders of Israel do not make a defensible border in any rational sense. At the narrowest point, the distance between the border and the sea would be about seven miles, the distance a tank could travel in fifteen minutes, a 4wd in ten and a bomber in one. It is impossible to defend such a narrow neck of land, and that neck cuts Israel north from Israel south. Go look at a map.

2. The river does make a defensible border, if the boundary of Israel is pushed to that area. Which is exactly what Israel is doing with the settlements. This is theft of land from the owners, who are not compensated (or not usually, given this is a discussion about Israel, people will doubtless flock to keyboards searching for ANY single person among thousands who ever got a cent from Israel. Sigh). For obvious reasons, this enrages the owners, who then support anyone who will attack Israel, including terrorists.

3. Israel is unwilling to accept the people already living in this area as citizens (the Roman solution). Counting Palestinians already forced outside their home country (go ahead, debate the exact phrase, you know exactly what I meant), Palestinians already outnumber Israelis.

4. Pushing the Palestinians into neighboring countries will no longer work, and is counterproductive, as the Palestinians have become political forces in these neighbors, and are an angry voice calling for war with Israel.

All the above are facts, they are easily checked, and they say flatly there is NO solution both Israel and Palestine can ever accept. So there will be war. And one side or the other will be driven to extermination.
