When 200 guys can pillage a town of 18,000 I would expect there is gun control in that town. But Wikepdia says Yemen is right behind the USA in terms of gun ownership (though with much uncertainty in estimate). I am puzzled. Does most of the population really support Al-Qaeda?

At a guess, most of the population was either in protected compounds or looting.
