Yes, but then like I said, pop music was a pretty large range back then. My mother liked the Beatles, Neil Diamond, Carol King, etc. And I'd say that her friends and my aunts did too. And us other little girls mainly listened to same kind of stuff. My dad listened to pop music too, but he was really more into the country pop stuff like Glen Campbell...Which was also played on the top 40 stations back then too.
It really wasn't until the late 70's and early 80's that top 40 or rock started splintering into different genres when FM radio came to be and stations started playing more selective types of pop or rock or music. Now a days you probably wouldn't hear Justin Bieber and heavy metal type music on the same station, but you would have back then.
Idealistic for me!
The difference here is probably in our different outlooks. Me, being a "sun child with flowers in my hair" and all.
I'd be falling over in my chair if I could think up a song as good as "Pray."
I am amazed. I am star-struck with this Bieber kid! (At least for now ) the more I listen to him, the more I like him. That last half of "Pray" I could call transcendent. I have sampled more than a few pop songs from recent years. Almost all of them are the very definition of "bland." Not to mention the harder musically-empty stuff like The Clash. It's almost as if an entire generation and a half had forsaken melody and rhythm altogether, as if it were out of date and passe. Pray may be the best popular pop song I have heard in decades.
Simplistic? Maybe. I can see why one faction would think Baby, Baby, Baby Ooh is banal, teenage tripe. I can also see why another faction swoons over it. Put me in the latter camp. I am fascinated by the purity, rhythmic accuracy, sincerity and beauty of his voice, and the melody is beautiful too. Sometimes, simple IS beautiful. Somehow it comes across as something special to a lot of people, mostly young girls; and maybe to some other folks. Justin is edgy and cool, fashionably so; but also has a wholesome side. This may be leading toward the kind of Millie civic music the authors predicted. A song like "Pray" certainly fits. A new big band era, of a different kind perhaps, is dawning.
I don't mind the morsels of rap from other artists, since they are just that, morsels.
Of course, maybe it fits that two of my favorite songs from the sixties were called "Baby Love" and Oooh Baby." Lyrics and titles are not so important to me, compared to melody, sound, arrangement, complexity with simplicity, beauty.....
you can hear these from my list http://philosopherswheel.com/ericrock.html
One song from the current era that I liked, was not a pop hit, but a theme from a movie I love. I've posted it here before. It has points in common with "Pray."

I added it to "favorites" on my you tube channel. So far I have "liked" "Pray", as of today, but it may become a "favorite" soon. There are other recent songs I like, but they have mostly been from European rock groups, such as
Everything Everything (this one I also listed as a "favorite").
Just a taste of what else I consider good current pop music, besides (gasp gasp)... Justin Bieber????
And yes, there are a lot of great musicians who are not noticed or appreciated like Bieber is. The reason why he's so big may be because he's "the complete package." You have to have the "charimsa" as well as the full range of talents.

"There have always been people who say: "The war will be over someday." I say there's no guarantee the war will ever be over. Naturally a brief intermission is conceivable. Maybe the war needs a breather, a war can even break its neck, so to speak. But the kings and emperors, not to mention the pope, will always come to its help in adversity. ON the whole, I'd say this war has very little to worry about, it'll live to a ripe old age."
My grandfather (1908) actually liked pop bands (anything with a strong and youthful beat) until the day he died. He also enjoyed watching 90s music videos with half dress gals.

And you know what, I think it's great Eric you've found some new tunes you can really dig. I don't share in your appreciation of Bieber at all - but I know what your enthusiasm is like in finding some good music that really makes you happy and brings out the best of you through listening to it. Recently I found a "new to me" singer over the last 6 months and I have not been able to stop listening to him as much as possible. Of course, none will ever compare to the giants of music to me (Waylon, Merle, Willie, George, Sammi Smith, etc.) but when I heard Ed Bruce for the first time I thought to myself: "Oh my God! That's absolutely fantastic!" - and you know what? Ed Bruce is probably not any more complex as oppose to Bieber.
It's just there is something about Bruce's music that hits me like you are hit by Bieber - the more I started listening to him the more I started really absolutely digging his mesh of music. It's like he was personally speaking to me. So, the world is certainly comprised of folks from all streams - and it can turn out to be fascinating to discover the artists we discover that really speak to us.

This is a man, not a transgendered person or a hermaphrodite. He works as a male model as well as a female model, and good for him. He's comfortable in his skin. I fail to see how he is an affront to women on any level. If women have body issues, they need to look elsewhere for a villian.
Now Justin Bieber, on the other hand, is playing his role for the money it brings ... pure and simple. I have a much larger issue with him.
Marx: Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.
Lennon: You either get tired fighting for peace, or you die.
I can't believe how much this thread is taking off.
Props to you, sir Eric!

Agreed. I've heard a lot of pretty decent music in the past few years. Recently I've been hearing this song on the radio and I really like it.
A Thousand Years by Christina Perri...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtOvBOTyX00
I don't know what genre of music it is...Pop rock, soft rock, or what?

Andrej Pejić is an androgynous man. Whether he is entirely biologically male (hermaphrodite is a derogatory term) or not is beside the point, the presence of androgynes within the fashion industry is common, but carries enough stigma that it is not talked about openly. It's the lack of openness about this topic which puts girls and women in danger. They are looking at ideal forms of feminine beauty that do not correspond to the way the majority of women look (less than 5% of female population with V-shaped predominately masculine bodies, rather than pear-shaped feminine bodies). If you have ever loved a woman, had a daughter or granddaughter it would actually be of some concern to you to, as unlike Bieber, this standard of beauty is not the exception, but the rule.
Some stats:
Males have body issues as well...But for females it's off the charts.53% of 13 year old girls are unhappy with their bodies
78% of 18 year old girls are unhappy with their bodies
Also working as a "female model" qualifies for the term transgendered. So whether or not Mr. Pejić is a beautiful androgynous male, this is still a valid topic to bring up, as just like Bieber, high fashion models are marketed primarily to females.
Projection much?
Guess so...
Cheers.

More about the song and the Bully film
More about Pray here:

The song was written by Bieber with Omar Martinez and Adam Messinger and Nasri of The Messengers, with the latter duo producing the track.
Oh goodie: Here's a video of my current favorite song Pray live at the American Music Awards:

The King of Pop is dead. Long live the King.
LOL...I thought the best part was at the very end with the father saying, "Oh God, I'm a terrible father." Something every parent can relate to. I think every parent at one time or another has made some little off handed to comment and suddenly their child is in tears.
This clip also reminded me of a time many, many years ago when I walked into my mother's house and my 5 year old little sister and her friend were standing on the kitchen table, dancing and singing to Madonna's "Like a Virgin." My brother-in-law looked at them, shook his head and said, "They don't even know what a virgin is."
