We've been in the $2.69 for regular range for a while now. There are a few places pushing that lower. I saw $2.63, but, of course, I didn't need any at the time.

Saw as low as $2.69 here. Of course, the first hurricane sighting and it will sky-rocket and become impossible to find.

Perth: AUD$1.39/L = US$4.02/gal

Actually, that's a bit of a relative improvement. The last times I've been down here gas has been double what we see in the States. Now, it sounds like it's only 50% higher.

Here, premium is up to $3.299. Up in Seattle last weekend I filled up for $3.459 per gallon... and that was reasonable, relatively speaking. Another station, near the Space Needle, apparently hoped to gouge the Folklife Festival crowd by charging $3.859.

Here in Arlington/Alexandria/Bailey's Crossroads (DC suburbs), gas is hovering around $3.00. Prices range from about $2.95 to $3.05. I tanked up recently for $2.97.

It's down a few cents from a week ago, when I had to hunt to find a place selling for under $3.00.

Up and down the populated edge of Queensland, the prices this weekend ranged between AUD$1.279 and AUD$1.369/L = US$3.64 to US$3.89 per gallon. Interestingly, diesel is somewhat higher at ~AUD$1.42/L = US$4.04/gal.

Something I've noticed around here lately: Usually, plus is ten cents above regular, and premium twenty cents above. But now, stations are holding regular below $3 (even at $2.999) and letting plus and premium get higher (say, around $3.20 or even $3.30.) I wonder if that's psychological.

Even worse now mid-week. I filled up (we're driving a lot this week; I've put in over AUD$350 since Friday) yesterday at a station in Ipswitch for AUD$1.209/L = US$3.39/L -- which, by the way, is for the 'low-grade' 91 octane.

Anti-American Octane in the Antipodes (and Eurasia)

MON testing uses a similar test engine to that used in RON testing, but with a preheated fuel mixture, a higher engine speed, and variable ignition timing to further stress the fuel's knock resistance. Depending on the composition of the fuel, the MON of a modern gasoline will be about 8 to 10 points lower than the RON. Normally fuel specifications require both a minimum RON and a minimum MON.

In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane that would be shown on the pump is the RON, but in the United States and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 10 point difference noted above, this means that the octane in the United States will be about 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "normal" gasoline in the US and Canada, would be 91 in Europe.

For the first time in several weeks, regular gas is again below $3.00 per gallon... $2.999 to be precise. Premium for me, of course, which has dropped a dime to $3.199. Have prices peaked for the year, or is this the calm before the storm? Guess it all depends on the hurricane season, and nukes in Iran.

Stations here were all afraid to sell regular over $3, but today several of them (in a relatively wide area) were around $3.049 for regular. We shall see what happens . . .

I guess the Redlands are good for something: $2.599/$2.699/$2.799 is the typical array of REG/PLUS/PREM. Some stations charge more if they can.

And... low and behold... the price per gallon at the neighborhood pump continues to drop. $2.899 for regular... $2.999 for plus. Premium is a few cents cheaper than convention would predict, at $3.079.
