Geez. We're at $1.859/1.959/$2.059 here in Vancouver... and apparently we're still paying more than in other places.

I was half-kidding when I said we could see gas back down to a buck a gallon again. Now I'm not so sure. What I am sure is that while the return of cheap gas should be occasion for rejoicing, in today's climate it feels... ominous. Like everything else.

Apparently I'm not alone. That, I suspect, is why even those still shopping for cars aren't lining up for big SUVs again... and driving to East Hell And Back in them. We're simply relieved for the momentary respite.

the prices in Vancouver you mentioned seem pretty much average. Around here, it varies beween $1.57 and $1.72 from what I've seen over the last 24 hours.
I pretty much agree with you though. I figure I'll enjoy it while it lasts! It's pretty friggin sweet being able to fill my tank for under ten bucks!

I've seen gas as low as $1.66 around here. Still, Kevin's right. If we were in the market for a new car, I'd be looking at Cooper Minis or Smart For Twos, as opposed to monster SUVs or pickups - even with gas down where it is now.

Whence Alt Energy?

What worries me about the price collapse is that all the green alternative energy projects have been shelved because in the current time, they don't make economic sense. However, if we don't start up soon, in the long run, our goose is cooked.

Yesterday afternoon on my way down Interstate Avenue in Portland, I passed a station selling regular petrol for $1.679.

Yeah, I like the Mini Cooper, particularly the sportier Cooper S... even if Jenny does think it's a Chickmobile .

If I bought one, it'd be British Racing Green with a white top and white rally stripes over the hood... the latter to make it ballsy by anyone's standards.

That's why the Obama administration needs to enact something like the energy tax Gore proposed in 2000. If we increase the gas tax by 5 cents a year for ten years and dedicate the revenues to alternetive energy, it will provide the seed money for the one thing we will need more than the cheap gas, which is likely to get expensive again as the middle east remains unstable over the next few years, that thing that we need is new unoutscorceable jobs.

I saw $1.499 in the North Valley yesterday, but where in the Northeast Heights did you see it, and is it anywhere near a bookstore?

I saw the $1.49 at a station at Moon and Menaul, and unfortunately there was no book stores that I noticed in the area.
One thing I did notice this evening was the Phillips 66 at Eubank and Lomas was $1.65 last night and down to $1.52 tonight!

Two items:
1) the station where I get gas dropped their price twice yesterday, from $1.69 to $1.63, then to $1.59.

2) reports online have it that gas in Roanoke, Va. is $.98 - back where it was when Dubya was inaugurated eight years ago!

Maybe the rest of us aren't all the at far behind Roanoke.

Well, gas prices hovered in the $1.50s around here for a month or so, and are now headed back up.

It's been pretty much going back and forth (or up and down) in the $1.49-$1.69 spectrum since I moved back here a month and a half ago. Currently, the cheapest I last saw was $1.65, but I havent checked yet as of this morning

The ruble falling faster than the dollar seems to have done a little bit of good in this neck of things. We had gas nominally drop down as of the beginning of the year, where it is sitting for right now. But with us at 32.93rubles to the 1USD (That's the highest it has been since the default Last time it was this high was a brief spike up to 32.57 in December '01) the 23.3rub/L we're paying comes off as $2.678/gal.

That's a bit higher than in the States, but compares really, really well to the 1.10-1.30Euro/L ($5.53 - $6.53/gal) that we saw in Europe.

Albuquerque: the latest fillup was at $1.689 per gallon - I got lucky and caught it just before it went up to $1.799. The one before that had been at $1.469. This looks like a real bounceback, not a dead cat bounce.

Prices dipped down again, and the ruble continues to fall faster than the USD. I filled up today at 21.5rub/L = $2.43/gal.

We've been holding at $1.999 for at least a week now.
