In inner Northern Virginia (Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church), we're running at around $1.84. That is about 10 - 15 cents higher than two weeks ago.

Heh heh. The crumbling ruble has done us some good at least in some areas. Local food prices have hardly budged (which means that for anyone who was smart enough to move into in dollars or euros -- as everyone was advising everyone else back in November -- things have gotten a fair bit cheaper). And gas has dipped down even a little more.
I filled up for 20.4rubles/L, which at today's rate of 36.06 rub/USD works out to $2.14/gal. Not bad at all..

-Now at $1.899/gallon.
Gas has gone up $0.20 per gallon since I last posted. The State of New Mexico, which depends heavily on oil & gas revenues, says its budget is looking very bad. Oil was less than $38 per barrel last I looked. How we reconcile those three is beyond me, but for what it's worth, I'm betting heavily on the price of gas going up.

Gas is around 1.80-1.90 in Cincinnati, I'm predicting it will freefall for another few weeks, and then we'll get another coordinated spike.
Dropped down here again to 20.20ruble/L (~=USD$2.09/gal)

Filled up at $1.999 in Albuquerque and renewed my resolution to use the car a lot less. Not that $2 is all that bad, but between health concerns and a gut feeling that gasoline will become more and more expensive as time goes by, it's the prudent thing to do. I wonder how many more of us think the same way?

Same in Albuquerque. I should have filled up earlier.

Still 18.60rub/L, but the USdollar took a nosedive two Thursdays ago when Geithner announced that when all else failed they were planning to print their way out of the hole. The Russian central bank still hasn't managed in the past week to inflate the ruble down enough to catch back up with the dollar (they'll get there, no worry). So we're at:
$2.067/gal

Wait until the rate drops down; then we'll have it slightly better on that count.
And in fact there is hardly any regional variation in gas prices here. What goes in Peter and Moscow is largely what goes in Khabarovsk and Yakutia -- and also in nowheres like Dudyinka and Khromtau.

Remember last summer when gas prices were well over four dollars in most of the country? Well, guess what! Summer is now approaching, and don't you wonder where the prices will go this time? Or do you honestly think that we learned a lesson from all this, that we can't keep on driving like there is no tomorrow and not expect this kind of comeuppance? Since there was a big fall in prices one might suspect that many actually are driving less, but am not sure this is the truth. There has still as yet to be a big push to reduce auto dependency, and so far nobody in the government seems to be making this suggestion, and even Obama, the supposed vehicle for change, has yet to come forth on this one. Do you think we ever will be willing to reduce our extreme reliance on cars and convert to more mass transit?
If I remember correctly, prices were already starting to rapidly increase last year around this time. They peaked about early to mid July. Where Im at it's basically been hovering between $2.00 and 2.05 the last few weeks. I see a few stations around now and then that are still under 2 bux
Well here is page 22, the relevant page of this thread.
Some prices from a year ago:
A year ago we were pushing the $4 a gallon mark hard. Now we're approaching $2 a gallon.Originally Posted by Several of you last year
So, we have some number of factors altered since last year. It could be that speculation in the form of a commodity bubble was at play. It could be that the economy has really gone bust since the 9-15-08 stock market crash. Or it could be both of these plus other factors.
Whatever the reason(s), something substantial has changed in the retail gas business since last year.
