Omens...

Here in New England, a series of major omens have been noted. The Red Sox won the World Series under a red moon. Jupiter is about to align with Venus.

Has there ever been a jump from 3T to 1T without a crisis?

Hmmm...well at least we did not have the Cubs vs the Red Sox last year!
That would have surely brought not just a crisis but the apocolypse! Surely the Messiah would have had to arrive!

Umm... While this style of argument has not been universally accepted, common sense suggests that an omnipotent, omniscient and benevolent Messiah could not possibly be a Cub or Red Sox fan.

With all the hubbub and anxiety surrounding the US Presidential election, it's easy to overlook the fact that with all the checks and balances, laws and formal procedures in place, nothing is likely to change suddenly regardless of who wins.

Not so elsewhere in the world. Yasir Arafat is back in the news, but he's not the only controversial, charismatic world leader in ill health with no clear successor. Fidel Castro and Karol Wojtyla (aka Pope John Paul II) are also in terminally declining health. While it is virtually certain that the next Pope will be from the Silent generation, and share the current Pope's conservative views, the next leaders of Cuba and Palestine are likely to be much younger, and far more confrontational and disruptive.

Amidst all the chaos and political spin of the next week, remember "it could be worse." :?
Yes we did!

Now the Yankees vs. the Mariners...that would have created quite a dilemma for yours truly! ;-)

13ers break Lost Curse of the Bambino

There that is all the proof needed - a bunch of ragtag, bad news bears ethos/pathos, nomad underdogs managed by a early Xer/gen jones/late boomer manager and an Xer wheeler and dealer GM survive and close the books on their generational soul brothers ... the circle is complete as vader would say - case closed.

I've heard it said that the Catholics, when electing popes, generally alternate between conservative and progressive leaders. Other than that, I'm not sure any of the other named gentlemen are benevolent forces of aid and comfort to The People. I might even look forward to replacements for Arafat and Castro.

If you're superstitious (or even if you're not), you should consider your own part in the situation. You posted at least twice (once here and once in another forum that we both read) that you hoped that the Cardinals would destroy the Yankees. That's called woofing. At that point, the Yankees were up on the Red Sox and may even have been up 3-0. As soon as you posted that, the Red Sox staged the biggest comeback in the history of major league baseball (if not in North American professional sports) and then went on to destroy the Cardinals. Moral of the lesson--don't woof!

Nope, we'll jump from a 3T back into a 2T, and make Eric very, very happy:

No. Jupiter and Venus. On the morning of November 5th, look to the east in Virgo. Really. And I think Jupiter and Venus would really be the more favorable alignment. In the song, that 'mars' thing was just to rhyme with 'stars.'

I don't remember reading that.

So how long has Canada been 4T?
Haha, Rick.

Well, there's always an anomoly, but I think that voter turnout increases whenever Civics can vote in material enough numbers. So, this may start a constant upward trend. And, there's really no historical precedent, being that women didn't vote until 1920 and all blacks couldn't really vote without fear until the 1960's.......

And before anyone says, well, Boomers didn't vote when the age got lowered.....we're talking now about Civics doing something CIVIC, folks. I don't think you can compare the two generations. We'll see Tuesday, I guess.

I just know that I am SO curious to know how many young people vote and who for and what their impact is (and if GenX actually voted, too), it almost equals my level of curiosity as to who is going to win! It's gonna be interesting, that's for sure.

As I've said before, despite all the heated rhetoric, not much is likely to change regardless of the outcome of the Presidential race, at least not immediately. However, there is another race whose outcome could shift the political climate immediately: that of Tom "The Hammer" Delay. Unfortunately, despite an unprecedented fourth rebuke from the House Ethics Commission, Delay still holds a comfortable lead in the polls. This is one to watch.
Yes we did!

The latest revisions to 3rd quarter economic data are out.

The good news: the GDP rose 3.7% annualized.
The bad news: economists had expected a 4.3% rate.

The good news: durable goods orders were up almost 17%, driving a 4.6% increase in consumer spending.
The bad news: wages increased only 2.4% in the same timeframe (a record low), meaning that the savings rate also dropped to an all-time low of 0.4%.

Well, at least this means that consumers are more confident about the future, right? Nope: the Consumer Confidence index showed a larger-than-expected drop to 92.8. While "current conditions" measure dropped only slightly, the "future expectations" measure dropped sharply.

So, it looks like we're still in an "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die" mood.
Yes we did!

Until something triggers first wave Boomers to go "last act urgent" and first wave Xers to focus and go cautious. They may not know it, but they're both itchin' to move in that direction.

I've heard it said that the Catholics, when electing popes, generally alternate between conservative and progressive leaders.
That may have been true in the past, but due partly to the Pope's longevity and partly due to rule changes he implemented, all but 3 of the 122 voting cardinals have been appointed by him personally.

Oh, no question they have been brutal dictators. However, they represent , above all, stability and iron-fisted control, which is why their succession will be so bloody.

I've heard that if the Redskins win tomorow, so will Bush. I do not follow pro football. Are they playing and against who?

They are playing Green Bay at Washington. Green Bay is the favorite, but not by a lot. Neither team is doing very well this year.

I guess that for a lot of years, if Washington wins, the party in power keeps the White House. Thus, Democrats ought to become Green Bay fans for the day.

The Pack rules!

But, what could have been the winning touchdown for the 'Skins was called back by a penalty. Let's hope that's not an omen that the election will be decided by another technicality.

Oh, hush, TrollKing. Why let the facts get in the way of an opportunity to work ourselves into a panic over nothing?
