I recently came across an article that stated that - instead of simply closing post offices off the beaten track, the postal service may keep them open with minimal hours.

Almost but not quite - my elderly mother was going to have a boarder in the spare bedroom. The deal was that this person was to do errands for my mother in exchange for the room. But the woman got a job elsewhere.

Hey - here is a quick question for any of you history buffs:

Where can I find a list of books, in chronological order of the history they describe, of western civilization - from the ancient greeks up
to the present day?

I used to see these kinds of lists of books online, but can't find any now.

Unhappy Get off of my lawn

The quietude of my day off was interrupted today by a door to door soliciter.
The experience really brought out my inner boomer.
He cut his pitch short and left quickly after he saw the look on my face.
I now to put up a no soliciters sign on my door lest it happen again.

Start by reading the Will and Ariel Durant series, "The Story of Civilization". It's 11 volumes. Don't rely on this as biblical truth, just a good solid background on the subject. Add additional material as needed to flesh-out this overview, which ended with Napolean in volume XI (published in 1975). From there, you're on your own.

I read these (well, most of them), in my youth. They're dated today, but still great background.

Lennon: You either get tired fighting for peace, or you die.

Hmm, that sounds more like your "inner Nomad". Wasn't it the Lost who told the young Boomer Dennis the Menace types to "keep off my lawn"?

Was the door-to-door soliciter young, by any chance?

It could welll have been. D the M was before my time and I really don't remember it being more than a TV show that was already well into reruns by the time was old enough to understand TV Econ 101. :

The pitchman looked to be mid 30ish, so I guess that he was a core Xer. He talked real fast and tried to use so called power words from advertising psycology like "relief" and "belief." I could almost predict his word choices before he made them. I just don't like unwillingly playing a role in someone's else prescripted commerical. Not that I would ever willingly do so. :

I have those books too, and got a lot of material from them that is not presented quite as well elsewhere.

According to the book, there is a tendancy for the membership-white, older, often Baby Boomer-to distain young adults. The image is that of underserving, foul mouth slackers. (Right-the steriotype of the recent Nomad generation). Of course, the ranks of young adulthood are now being filled with a young Civic generation...which brings up a question-how will an anti-youth bias affect political forturnes?

In an article in the Economist, it is stated that infrastructure for America's inland waterways...is falling into disrepair. This is important for the movement of freight.

Seattle Times Feb. 6 '13-article states that there is a shortage of farm workers. Apparently this is due to a stronger Mexican economy.

Could you imagine if Romney had won, how his Secretary of State - John Bolton, perhaps - would be reacting to the current situation in North Korea?
But maybe if the putative Robin Hoods stopped trying to take from law-abiding citizens and give to criminals, take from men and give to women, take from believers and give to anti-believers, take from citizens and give to "undocumented" immigrants, and take from heterosexuals and give to homosexuals, they might have a lot more success in taking from the rich and giving to everyone else.

Don't blame me - I'm a Baby Buster!

The neocons love a good fight, as long as it's other people doing the fighting.

The Missionaries did too - and so did the Transcendentals, and so did the Awakeners.

With the exception of the Transcendentals and the neocons, we didn't go out of our way looking for a fight.

Boomers hate telemarketers.

Perhaps it's a general Joneser "inner Boomer" thing to despise in person solicitation and over the phone types.

I got some weird phone call coming over my cell phone from the 555 area code. I don't know anyone from that area code , so I looked it up on the computer. Yup, telemarketer. I then used my favorite cell phone feature, "reject calls".I recall S&H writing about Boomers also hanging up on telemarketers. I think it goes on the lines of MY minutes,MY time are important and should not be wasted on door bell and phone spam.

Which generation invented the telemarketing model again?

Besides, I don't think hating telemarketing is a generational attribute as it is more of a human attribute.

I think we can scale that back to a mammillain trait, at leaste a primate trait. Lizards might like telemarketing, but I can't think of many others that do.

"Again"? I do not know because of multiple interpretations. For example, it's the Lost who ran those 1920's era boiler room operations.
The concept of origination of "pump and dump" was a Lost innovation.

Do you mind if I extend that to unsolicited post replies? I wonder if Brian,Bob,Eric,Mikebert, etc. have that notion in mind as well?

Sorry, the "again"was a rhetorical flourish.

Probably not appropriate. You voluntarily entered the forum. Call it "signing up for a mailing list" instead.

Not sure what you referring to. I don't see the posts. I just use the what's new link and add any spam to the ignore list.
