Well, I took two more enneagram tests (as Stonewall surmised the first one was the RHETI) and the results are contrary enough for me to not have much confidence in any of them. On the New Test, I came out an 8 (13 points), followed by 3 (8 points). I scored 3 points on 2, 2 points on 7, and 1 point on 5. On the doniho I came out a 5 (with 16 points), followed by 8 (14 points), and 1 and 3 at 13 points. So I'm a 3, an 8, and a 5 on three different tests. Go figure.

The enneagram results are very confusing... I took at least 4 or 5 and got different results each time but my last 2 results were 5w6 and 4w5 so I put them together to FINALLY conclude that I am a 5w4

Dave, for whatever it is worth, I quickly retook a few of these and the "New Test's" results were less clear than they have been in the past and my wing changed on the Duniho. Of course, I flew through them so I might need to sit down and really concentrate on them. Regardless, if this Enneagram does have any value, I have never had any confidence that anybody has yet come up with a reliable test.

Let's see if we can pull a consistently strong type from your various tests:

RHETI: 3(7); 8(6); 5(5); 7(5)

New Test: 8(13); 3(8); 2(3); 7(2); 5(1)

Duniho: 5(16); 8(14); 1(13); 3(13)

Vince can probably tell from this because there are certain secondary types which represent favored directions of integration and disinitegration for each type (which should be emphasized in your results). But obviously, both 8 and 3 are consistenly represented strongly for you. 5 should be mentioned as well even though it nearly bottomed out on one test. If these match a certain type's "directions," then that is probably your type. But I don't know anything about that. Vince or somebody else would have to comment.

Yes, it really does seems like he could have asked some better questions, which is why I think you have to allow quite a margin for error on this thing. For example, I went ahead and called myself an idealist before a realist, but am I really? I am in that "in between" zone with Kant. I think what does matter is that idealism and realism are both right up there in my makeup while pragmatism and existentialism really do not rate. Only idealism and realism are worth mentioning and both should be given about equal weight.

But what of patterns? I show idealism and realism. Mr. Saari shows idealism and pragmatism. You are showing no particular emphasis in any area. I suspect that there should be a fairly consistent pattern but this test is not isolating it with any accuracy.

Here is perhaps a better philosophy test which Tristan once linked on another thread, if I am not mistaken. Even if there are no generational correlations, there may be type correlations. If you wish to take it, post your MBTI type along with your scores. Maybe Robert will be able discern a pattern.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I see no clear pattern here. I happened to check the Philosophy section at Selectsmart and it looks like they have acquired a number of new philosophy tests over the past few weeks. However I am not certain that all of them are worth taking for comparison purposes. For example, one appears to give fairly good results, but maybe half the philosophers considered are existentialist (not much variety). There is a Metaphysical Philosopher test, but I suspect that he has attempted to rank too many philosophers with too few questions (needs further evaluation).

I found one however which takes a different tack. It is the Philotype test and it seems to compare you, not necessarily or exclusively to philosophers according to their beliefs, but instead to their temperaments. I am not sure if it is a worthwhile effort or not but it may just give us a consistency which we are not getting from the current Ethical Philosopher test (which itself seems to me to be a fairly good one). If nothing else, it is fun and comes in handy during that free moment of boredom. Here is the link:

I was just commenting how this test, although good, was not giving us a clear temperamental pattern since it seemed like everybody, of widely divergent temperaments, was getting remotely similar results. Now Helio breaks away from the pack! I see a stronger existentialist influence than I believe we have seen thus far. Could it be that INFPs are given to existentialism? I suppose that might make sense. You ought to take that first test with 40 questions, assessing Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism, and Existentialism, and see how you come out. I would be interested to see if you come out existentialist first.

Incidentally, we may be fleshing something out by using both the Ethics and Philotype tests. I wish Robert would come in here and do some analysis. For example, compare my results to Dave Krein's. This is worth noting because Dave and I use the same order of functions but in their opposing attitudes (INTP = TiNeSiFe; ENTJ = TeNiSeFi). One would think that we would veer off in different directions, yet I think we came out very similarly on the Ethics test. However we did diverge on the Philotype test and that divergence may relate to the temperamental difference. Have not had time to analyze it yet but it will be interesting to see how other people diverge from each other on that Philotype test.

Stonewall does actually seem to fit the Kantian description... always thinks, I mean, "knows" that he is right, writes very long posts, has a very rigid opinion on about everything, etc.

Actually, I only have a "very rigid opinion" on a few things and on those things I "know" that I am right because my space or somebody else's is being violated, presumptuously and arrogantly, by some other mere mortal. Where people do not violate people's rights (or space), I am completely tolerant as to whatever they may be doing because that is for God to judge, not man. This is a very important distinction and, if you do not understand this, then you do not understand me...or the principles upon which this great nation was founded.

I think you may be on to something about this, Stonewall, and the results of Mitch's (finally, another INFP!) test are interesting in that both he and I have Sartre and Neitsche in the Top 5. Justin '79 as I recall was also INFP, and while he never took this test, he definitely struck me as having an existentialist, atheistic philosophy of life.

However, I did notice that while I have Spinoza in #1 place, Mitch has Spinoza in LAST place. I will have to brush up on my knowledge of philosophy. But I do have a somewhat fatalistic attitude about the meaninglessness of events, though I do believe in God. Can one be an existentialist and still believe in God? And how would this differ from the Cynics?

But it is good to know that I have company in this sea of ISTx and INTz types.
It's like a bug high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like its looks, you make a pet out of it.
