In an effort to pin down what year the balance tipped, I will attempt to fill in some more of Stonewall's 1905-07 cohorts as Lost or GI (or more precisely, Nomad or Hero archetypes). Even I can't finish the list-- Perhaps others can pick up where i leave off? My fill-ins are in CAPS:

03-Jan-1905 Ray Milland - ??
04-Jan-1905 Sterling Holloway - ??
12-Jan-1905 Tex Ritter - Lost?
02-Feb-1905 Ayn Rand - LOST (fits the "crusty conservative S&H model to a T)
10-Feb-1905 Lon Chaney, Jr. - Lost?
29-Mar-1905 Philip Ahn - ??
15-May-1905 Joseph Cotten - Lost?
16-May-1905 Henry Fonda - GI
21-Jun-1905 Jean-Paul Sartre - Lost
02-Aug-1905 Myrna Loy - Lost?
25-Aug-1905 Clara Bow - Lost
18-Sep-1905 Eddie "Rochester" Anderson - ??
18-Sep-1905 Greta Garbo - Lost
07-Oct-1905 Andy Devine - ??
17-Oct-1905 Jean Arthur - ??
05-Nov-1905 Joel McCrea - ??
19-Nov-1905 Tommy Dorsey - Lost?
24-Dec-1905 Howard Hughes - Lost?
28-Dec-1905 Cliff Arquette - ??
28-Dec-1905 Earl "Fatha" Hines - ??

14-Jan-1906 William Bendix - Lost?
15-Jan-1906 Aristotle Onassis - Lost?
02-Feb-1906 Gale Gordon - ??
04-Feb-1906 Clyde W. Tombaugh - LOST (he was the astronomer who discovered the planet Pluto-- pretty much a loner's job)
26-Feb-1906 Madeleine Carroll - ??
06-Mar-1906 Lou Costello - GI? (No-- I'd call him Lost actually)
16-Mar-1906 Henny Youngman - GI?
20-Mar-1906 Ozzie Nelson - GI
04-Apr-1906 John Cameron Swayze - GI
13-Apr-1906 Samuel Beckett - ??
03-Jun-1906 Josephine Baker - very LOST!!! She could almost be described as the last saeculum's Mariah Carey
22-Jun-1906 Billy Wilder - ??
05-Aug-1906 John Huston - Either?
25-Sep-1906 Dmitri Shostakovich - Lost?
05-Dec-1906 Otto Preminger - Lost?
06-Dec-1906 Agnes Moorehead - Either?
27-Dec-1906 Oscar Levant - ??

03-Feb-1907 James Michener - GI
15-Feb-1907 Cesar Romero - LOST (he had the same sort of vaudevillian comedic edge that Abott and Costello, George Burns and the Marx Brothers had)
22-Feb-1907 Sheldon Leonard - ??
22-Feb-1907 Robert Young - GI?
28-Feb-1907 Earl Scheib - ??
12-May-1907 Katharine Hepburn - Either?
22-May-1907 Sir Laurence Olivier - Lost?
26-May-1907 John Wayne - GI
16-Jul-1907 Barbara Stanwyck - GI
29-Jul-1907 Melvin Belli - GI?
15-Sep-1907 Fay Wray - Lost?
29-Sep-1907 Gene Autry - Lost?
25-Dec-1907 Cab Calloway - Lost?

I'd give the nod to 1907 for the Lost/GI boundary-- I see Nomad archetypes outnumbering Heroes in 1906, at least among people of notoriety.

Onassis was Greek so he doesnt count.
Beckett wasnt American either.
I still lean towards 1904/5 ish.
My great grandma ran away to join in Vaudeville, but what would make her different than an early 80s cohort in Hollywood of the late 90s, like Thora Birch, or Lee lee Sobieski or Kirsten Dunst?

She was really GI.
Theres nothing Lost about her.
She was an icon of that generation as much as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, or Gary cooper.
They were the people entering midlife in the High. They eneterd youth in the crisis.
Im starting to think that the real difference between Nomads and Heros in youth, is that Nomads had an Awakened childhood and Heros had a Unravelled childhood.
It would make sense that Heros would be cynics as children, for we live in a cynical age and they have grown up in it.
But they wouldnt have had the same Awakened childhood all Xers had.
The Boomers would be no different. They would have at some point had a High childhood.
This is why the 1984 and 1964 boundaries are so important because they delineate this cut off.

Thanks, Kevin. I was going to advise you not to limit yourself to the 1905-1907 range as I did but I see that you are thinking along similar lines anyway. Comments:

You'd have to flesh out the "crusty conservative" argument a little more for me. She was actually more of a libertarian than a conservative. But she certainly was a capitalist if you are relying upon that.

I see GI elements in her as well though. I always considered Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, for example, to have more of a civic flavor although individual characters seemed more Lost. Of course any civic flavor may have been a function of the times in which she was writing those works. But I am still not seeing her as unambiguously Lost though. However I think it is minimally close enough to consider her Lost.

14-Jan-1906 William Bendix - Lost?
Let me change this one. This is the Life of Riley guy, right? I was having a hard time picturing him but now I see him as more GI.

04-Feb-1906 Clyde W. Tombaugh - LOST (he was the astronomer who discovered the planet Pluto-- pretty much a loner's job)
Good call.

06-Mar-1906 Lou Costello - GI? (No-- I'd call him Lost actually)
I caught your argument about Vaudeville below and I see the merit in calling him Lost. However doesn't he just seem more GI personally?

03-Jun-1906 Josephine Baker - very LOST!!! She could almost be described as the last saeculum's Mariah Carey
Hehe. Good call.

15-Feb-1907 Cesar Romero - LOST (he had the same sort of vaudevillian comedic edge that Abott and Costello, George Burns and the Marx Brothers had)
Excellent call. This was the Joker on Batman, right? I wanted to call him Lost but I was not sure. In the context of Vaudeville, he certainly fits more cleanly.

I'd give the nod to 1907 for the Lost/GI boundary-- I see Nomad archetypes outnumbering Heroes in 1906, at least among people of notoriety.
Duly logged.

I actually see Gene Autry as Lost. In assessing these people, I try to picture them all in a room at a party. The community-oriented GIs would be clustered in large groups. The more individualist Lost would be clustered in smaller groups or just found solo wallflowers. This is not an exact analogy but I suspect it is pretty good. Autry may have played the role of a gregarious Singing Cowboy, but I still see the real man clustered in a small group of his peers in the room. Therefore I call him Lost.

I think Katherine Hepburn could go either way. I do not see clear-cut GI. She would be another one in a small group at the party but I am not as certain that I would call her Lost. I think she is as "cuspy" as it gets.

I cannot even picture Billy Wilder so I will not bother.

Yes, and I think that Clark Gable was pretty Lost. What was he, 1901? He would be in a larger cluster at the party but he really would not belong with all those GIs. He was something of an elder. Cary Grant seems really "cuspy" to me. Gary Cooper I see as a wallflower at the party and definite Lost. Not really civic.

My great grandma ran away to join in Vaudeville, but what would make her different than an early 80s cohort in Hollywood of the late 90s, like Thora Birch, or Lee lee Sobieski or Kirsten Dunst?
Well, I tend to agree with Kevin on this. Vaudeville was distinctly Lost. GIs came right after and gravitated toward moving pictures and later talkies (I think?). I think there was a generational difference with respect to preferred forms of entertainment.

I still lean towards 1904/5 ish.
Yeah, yeah, that's because you associate Gary Cooper and Clark Gable, etc. with the younger, more clearly GI actors. But I don't see any GI in Gary Cooper, the man. And I do not see Clark Gable as any sort of civic.

I guess you are right.
I dont know anything abour Gary Cooper. I know Clark Gable was chosen over Reagan for Gone with the Wind. Honestly those early years are really strange.
1904 must have been a weird time.

I found another database of birthdates to aid in the determination of the Lost/GI boundary. Maggie Kuhn was born in 1905.
She founded the "Gray Panthers" in 1970.
I think she is a significant cohort.

I hate to contradict "God" but an individual is not a cohort. Maggie Kuhn is a significant member of the 1905 cohort.

Thus speaks the Grammarian.

I've heard both usages a lot on this forum interchangeably...

It originally signified one-tenth of a Roman legion (300-600 men) and came to represent any crowd, group, or retinue. However it eventually came to represent any colleague or associate as well. If you look it up, you will find that both usages are acceptable. However one usage is certainly truer to the term's origin (although how true to the origin is any group not representing one-tenth of the whole?

Wasn't Vonnegut a lot younger and didn't he actually serve in the war? I'm not seeing how he and Orwell were in the same crowd. I actually see a lot more Lost in Orwell. I believe he was a socialist of the Anarchist variety like so many Lost and was even in Spain with them. Same outlook, same sentiments, same crowd. Crosby is easier to see as a GI. Spock wrote a book that GIs used, but why does that make him a GI? I'm an Xer and I have read a variety of authors from generations spanning centuries. Are they all suddenly Xers, even if they have been dead for 500 years, simply because I as an Xer have read them? The question is whether Spock the man was more Lost or GI in character. I don't know enough about him to say.

1904: Verdict: GI
Dorothy Parker would never write something like Seuss. Him, Orwell, Golding and others have a similar take on the world.
I think Orwell's take on the world was pretty Lost. For example, 1984 reflected one hell of a lot of disillusionment, did it not? What am I missing here?

Glen Miller is GI music.
Yes, and the Beatles were Boomer music but the Beatles themselves were mostly Silents. U2 is Xer music but the members of U2 are mostly or entirely Boomer. I don't know enough about Glenn Miller to say for sure, but I see him more as a Lost (in a small group or solo at that hypothetical Lost/GI party).

1906: Verdict: definite GI
only a GI would invent LSD by accident trying to cure headaches, and like Mel Blanc and the other Bugs animators, friz belongs with the GIs...
Considering this and the other list, I see 1906 as the first really GI year. Not only are there more of them, but the GI cohorts are more decidedly GI (as in mixing in well in those big GI groups at the party). By the numbers, Kevin threw the boundary back to 1907. But I am having a tough time excluding 1906 as a GI year. I think it is about evenly split and the first GI year. 1907 had the first clear GI edge and 1908 was definitely GI.
