AIDS isn't the disease it once was. Since the introduction of retro-viral combination drugs (cocktails) in the mid 90s the treatment and extension has gotten much better and longer. Soon there will be new drugs that will kill the virus although it cannot end infection. So as for the disease it might be grim, but the many treatments that are out there are making the circa 1989 AIDS not the 2002 AIDS.

You know sexual liberation wasn't just easy hook ups. I was reading alot about the origin of AIDS in the gay community (where it started) in the bathouses and private sex clubs (Fist Fucking society of America). Alot of people found out they were infected while recovering from many other STDs.

Just be educated. And people don't just get the disease from being sluts. Many get it by accident. I read one story about a woman that stepped on a syringe at a concert.
It's out there and will continue to be out there.
The best thing to do about it is not to be afraid but to look at it, not like some dark disease, but a reality. I bet infection rates would go down if things weren't so over the top dramatic about it.

Definitely blame Boomers for the drama.
Anyway as for war in Iraq, I piss my mother off daily (who's greatly in favor of this war, but not Vietnam) by singing songs like "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye around the house.

Yes, but only once there is a cure for AIDS. I expect it will happen during the next awakening with the cure coming during the next high. All when we are too old to enjoy it.

Wait, that would be just enough time for me to have a kid, and for him or her to be an artist type happily "adapting" while crusty old dad the xer bitches at them!

Oh, this is sooooooo not fair.

My guess is that the next Awakening will be puritanical rather than free-and-easy because AIDS, herpes 2, genital warts et al will probably only be curable in the late High. The old people (Xers) will still remember those plagues from the Millennial Saeculum all too well, and incessantly remind people about the appearance of new even more sinister maladies.

Remember how obsessed GI and Silent parents were with their children's cleanliness (twice-daily baths, no spitting in the street, etc.) back in the late High and Awakening? Lots of that had to do with the recently-faded scourges of polio and tuberculosis. In fact, the visceral reaction towards deliberately-unwashed hippies (actually a minority of Boomers) on part of the Lost, GIs and Silent was related to a very real, primal, fear of disease.

Put your cursor directly to the right of the symbol, and left-click and highlight it just as you would highlight a piece of text you wanted to copy or alter.

That effect is in my browser, too!

It's amazing how the anti-war and civil rights rock songs of the 60s and 70s are now used to sell hamburgers at Burger King and cars from Toyota and such...my goodness...even MLK Jr. is used as a marketing device.

On weddings:

I got married outdoors on a lakeshore. My cousin (a professional singer) provided the music, along with a friend of his who accompanied him on piano. A Quaker minister friend of ours performed the ceremony. My aunt made my dress. We hired no photographer as both of our families have camera-crazy members and we knew we'd get quality photos one way or another.

My folks picked up the tab for the site rental, the food, the flowers, etc. My mom hand-wrote all the invitations. I tried very hard to keep costs down in making my choices. For instance, we held the ceremony at 11:00 and served a light lunch afterwards instead of dinner. My parents also threw a reception at their house in the afternoon.

The only thing I regret about my wedding is that we didn't videotape it.

Austin is a Silent. He's one of those late-1930s early 1940s cohorts (like the Beatles) that used to mingle at Indica gallery back in th day.
Boomers were "coming of age" they weren't established photographers, like Linda McCartney (1941-1998).
Think of the hip Silent as the one getting the attention, and the Boomers as those girls in go-go boots fawning with adoration.

Ah yes, the Swinging Silents of the 60's. i remember them well. Long hair, with a comb-over to hide the bald spot. At first they wore scarves, tied with a scarf ring, but it wasn't long before they were sporting love beads. Bell bottom polyester. Lookin for young hippie chicks. Turned on to pot, but never really enjoying it, because it interfered with their drinking.

If the Silent women became anti-establishment, they seemed to go for liberation, astrology, Fritz Pearle, art fairs, and the organic scene.

They were everywhere.

Which was more surprising, that they were chasing hippie chicks, or how often they succeeded in catching them?

I don't remember them catching too many YOUNG hippie chicks. If I recall correctly, they may have been used by the Boomers for partying purposes.

Hehehe. Wasn't it David '47 who cited Holland as an example of an "advanced society"? Actually, I agree with him on this in many ways and disagree in other ways. That liquid product is definitely gross. But if somebody wants to drink that stuff, I guess it is their business and not mine.

I found this.

SYNOPSIS
Director John G. Avildsen's violent and gritty portrayal of the clash between the counterculture and establishment of 1970s New York became an instant cult classic. Dennis Patrick stars as Bill Compton, a New York advertising executive whose hippie daughter, Melissa (Susan Sarandon in her film debut), is sent to rehab after she's found overdosing in an East Village drugstore. Melissa's unrepentant junkie boyfriend, Frank (Patrick McDermott), wallows in drugs and squalor until Bill visits him and flies into a violent rage that ends in murder. This act of violence wins him the admiration of Joe (Peter Boyle), a flag-waving bigoted blue-collar worker, as the two strike up an unlikely friendship in a local bar. Joe's knowledge of Bill's heinous crime becomes a subtle form of emotional blackmail as the two men spend time together in a bizarre class struggle between their two disparate worlds. When Melissa runs away, the two friends, joined in their fear and hatred of the counterculture, begin a search for her in the bohemian haunts of New York's East Village. Their search turns into an ironic night of liberation as the two men carouse with a group of young hippies. However, as the evening comes to a close the two men are consumed by their hatred and guilt. A final conflict with the hippies ends in a deeply disturbing and violent climax. This stylized and stark view of hate crimes and the 1970s counterculture remains shocking and relevant to this day.

Theatrical release: July 15, 1970.

What made me think of this movie in relation to the current conversation on this thread is the pathetic sex scene between middle age Silents and Boomer Hippie chicks.

By the way, of course, Austin Powers is a Silent, and if the movies had really been made in the 60s & early 70s Michael Caine would have played him.

Pax,

Dave Krein '42
