When I see or hear the word "dude" a mental image of Bob Hope wearing outrageously exaggerated white, wooly chaps immediately appears, signifying a city-slicker, hopelessly unable to cope with the realities of life. Such an understanding of the word is undoubtedly generational.

Bob Hope? Dude.
Looking at that page again, I was actually using the word like this:
2) Adj - expression of emphasis, amazement, or awe
Calling it an adjective threw me off. Per Schoolhouse Rock, it should be "interjection."

Marx: Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.
Lennon: You either get tired fighting for peace, or you die.
I think in Boomer USA, dude still means male. So, different meanings in different generations. Gen X girls, are they more rugged individualists and cynics, like nihilist? More "macho," then? Maybe they like the word, then. Maybe they are more used to gender equality too. Maybe millennials aren't all this, and don't. Just speculation on my part.
Now, I wonder if we can get back to real issues? Nihilist, care to lead the way? (fat chance....)
As for Kinser, I say: not props, but plops (pie in the face).
Dude. If you want to talk about "Gen X girls," you had better speak in the past tense.

Considering that this is the religion thread the chance of us dealing with real issues is very slim indeed. Whether NM leads or not.
I know Eric. You just can't stand that someone here is actually smarter than you (not all that surprising really...I've met rocks with higher IQs than you, Eric). I call you Eric-the-Ignoramus for a reason. As for Kinser, I say: not props, but plops (pie in the face).
In American vernacular for those who were born after 1960 the word "dude" is gender neutral. For example:
"Dude, get a grip." I used that the other day to a female.
Likewise the word "guys" is gender neutral in American vernacular for those born after 1960. For example:
"How are you guys doing?" Spoken to a group composed of males and females.
The word "dudette" might be used to specifically refer to a female as well, but the way NM used it, dude would be more standard for American vernacular.
ETA: I might also want to include that in some types of American Vernacular, use of the term "dude" depending on the way it is said can be construed as essentially using the word "asshole". This is most common in Southern American English.

There's an annual contest at Bond University, Australia, calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term:
The winning student wrote:
"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of shit by the clean end."
