A little juvenile Silent humor:

Ta-ra-ra-BOOM-de-ay
There is no school today!
The teacher passed away
We dumped her in the Bay
Ta-ra-ra-BOOM-de-ay
The sharks had lunch today
There is no school today
Ta-ra-ra-BOOM-de-ay

And note the chorus is from an old Missionary Generation song!

I remember that song from my childhood too. I don't remember all the lines, but here's part of the juvenile Xer version that I can recall...

Ta-ra-ra-BOOM-de-ay

He took my dress away
While I was standing there
He took my underwear

So, yah, we were a little less sheltered.

Some of the same from my yoot:

This is the story of the burning of the school,
we've tortured every teacher, and we've broken every rule
We shot the secretary and we hung the principal
The kids are mar-ching on!

glory, glory hallelujah!
Teacher hit me with a ru-ler.
Met her at the bank with a US army tank
and she ain't my teacher no more!

...also sung to a historical tune (battle hymn of the republic, I believe?). There were a number of additional choruses, each with its own variation on the appropriate response to corporal punishment.

Ah, back in the day.

Yup. Battle Hymn of the Republic. When I consider how fierce that song is, I also remember that Julia Ward Howe had a husband and four children --- back in the day when things piled up at home, I used to sing Civil War songs a lot.

This is what I recall from elementary school:

On top of the schoolhouse
All covered with blood
I shot my poor teacher
With a .44 slug

I went to her funeral,
I went to her grave.
Some people threw flowers,
I threw a grenade.

It blew up the city.
It blew up the town.
It blew my poor teacher
Right out of the ground.

Now it seems my poor teacher,
Was not quite dead.
So I took a machete,
And I chopped off her head."

Heh. "some people threw flowers; I threw a grenade."

How could I have forgotten that one?

At any rate, it still apparently still holds up after all these years. My 12 year old is standing next me, reading this and laughing his head off.

The song apparently carried all the way from Badger's dinosaur days down to my near-modern schooling experience. Does your son sing (or, do they in his school have) a variant of it?

He says they still sing it but it's about Barney instead of the teacher.

It was still there in my elementary school days, so there's a good chance it would be. We had plenty of teacher is dead songs, along with the many anti barney songs.

The Buffalo Theory

Picture Norm from Cheers (with apologies to Adina):

"Well you see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive drinking of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers"

Kinda explains everything, doesn't it?

Superbly interesting. From both topical and technical perspectives. Funny too, which is not always a guarantee with good ted.

Too true. Though I loved the iconography of his Generalissimo el Busho character. Made me snicker every time I saw him.

I also miss the Hello Kitty flag he always had accompanying Obama back during the campaigns. He's got such a good grasp for visual metaphor.

...

by the way, totally check out that link in my above. Ted's not bad as a journalist, too.
